Shifting requires ignoring conventional approaches, paving your own path
If you want to stand out in this world, you must get really serious about doing something different and moving away from the “sea of sameness.” Focus on being different.
Ordinarily, we achieve conventional wisdom following conventional ideas. We experience reasonable gains when we rely on reasonable approaches. You may find ways to make modest improvements and, in turn, make a modest income. But, if you go looking for nothing more than that, you will only have modest gains.
Experts stand out and get noticed for the differences they make, not by following the status quo. They create quantum leaps by abandoning what’s been done and said before. Instead of once again doing what you have always done, shift to an even more powerful intensity and determination to be different.
A shift like this requires an abrupt change in behavior. You must do something new and different!
The tendency, when you begin to stall out or get stuck when starting out, is to go back to the basics and do what you do “best.” But doing what you do best can be the worst thing you can do. It really doesn’t matter how well you can do something if it’s the wrong thing for you to do.
For example, my brother Terry is a highly successful entrepreneur who’s built his own million dollar business. He’s been an entrepreneur from a very young age, just like me. We both grew up in a family car rental business as teenagers, learning the business as we grew it step-by-step. When Terry was in his late 20s he left the business for about a year to pursue a career he was much more passionate about.
When he left, it gave me the courage and commitment to pursue my own passion. So I left the family business too, to start a business on my own that I was more passionate about. I’ve never looked back since that day and believe me when I say, “If I’m not having fun, I’m not going to do it anymore.”
But, after about a year, my brother went back to the car rental business and purchased it from my father. He has been running that same business now for over 40 years. It’s a very successful business, but he hates it and can’t wait to get out and sell it. HATE is a strong word. I’m sure he enjoys the income and security but he feels trapped because he’s bored and not fulfilling his passion. He’s just making money but he is not feeling fulfilled. There’s nothing wrong with making lots of money – I’m all for that – but why settle for just money when you can LOVE what you do and make even more money in return?
If you don’t shift to shaking things up, years can go by like they did for my brother. You can find yourself doing the same thing far too long.
Faith in the familiar can keep you stuck and unhappy in your career.
Shifting may require an abrupt change in your direction and behaviors. To thrive in life, you must do something new – something inspiring that keeps you excited every day, something that drives you to succeed despite any obstacle.
You shift when you reinvent yourself and your business. This requires you to break out of the rut or routine you’ve been hanging on to.
Start by second-guessing your daily routines and overcome the addiction to your own methodologies. Set a new pattern – a new intention you are excited and passionate about – that utilizes your wisdom and supports others in return.
If the things you’re doing bore you or are no longer working, stop doing them. Focus on what works. If you’ll just quit what you’ve been doing and allow some “space,” new opportunities will instantly appear.
